INSIGNIFICANT?

ARE WE INSIGNIFICANT OR THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS?

The INSIGNIFICANT? series explores the tension between the scale of the human being—our largeness or smallness—and our relative power or vulnerability.

Tiny human figures stand before monumental spaces and forms—sometimes organic and natural, at other times geometric, architectural, and human-made. Their encounter unsettles our conventional assumptions about the relationship between scale, power, and significance.

Against this immense scale, the human figure appears almost insignificant: a tiny point within a world infinitely larger than itself. Yet it is precisely this point that observes, creates, builds, influences, and transforms the world around it.

The light that repeatedly appears behind the figure, leaving it almost without identity, transforms it from a particular individual into a representation of us all.

The works do not attempt to define our place in the world, but rather to raise questions: What is the true scale, importance, and meaning of the human being? How do we measure ourselves against nature, and against the structures and technologies we ourselves have designed and built? Does humanity only widen the gap between itself and its surroundings through intervention, development, and construction—ultimately making itself appear even smaller?

Is the tiny point on the canvas really “just” a point—or might it be the essence of everything, containing within it the ultimate power?
